About Mihingo Game Reserve

Mihingo Game Reserve is located in the eastern part of Rwanda, adjacent to Akagera National Park, and spans approximately 50,000 acres of protected East African savanna and wetland landscapes. It was established after the 1994 Rwandan genocide primarily as a conservation effort to restore and protect native wildlife populations, including elephants, lions, buffalos, giraffes, zebras, and numerous antelope species. The reserve provides important habitat connectivity between Rwanda’s protected areas and the neighboring Serengeti ecosystem. Its terrain features open grasslands interspersed with acacia trees and seasonal wetlands that support a variety of bird species, including some rare waterfowl. Mihingo Game Reserve is particularly noted for its successful reintroduction and stabilization of lion populations, supporting Rwanda’s broader wildlife tourism development goals. For visitors, the reserve offers guided game drives, walking safaris, and birdwatching tours in a less crowded environment than larger national parks. Its proximity to Akagera allows for extended safaris and exploration of Rwanda’s diverse wildlife. The reserve's lodgings provide close-to-nature accommodations that combine comfort with an authentic wilderness experience. Mihingo’s conservation efforts include anti-poaching patrols and community outreach programs aimed at preserving both wildlife and the local environment. The reserve is a key player in Rwanda’s emerging wildlife tourism industry, focusing on sustainable, high-quality safari experiences. Due to private management, visitor access is typically arranged through tour operators or lodges and includes expert guides knowledgeable about the local flora, fauna, and conservation challenges.
